Backyard rebuild: drainage, walls and a fire pit

Challenge
Drainage problems, sloped areas losing soil and too much overgrown vegetation.
Approach
We assessed the existing layout, found the root causes of the drainage issues and built one complete plan around fixing them.

Front entrance · Design and installation · Built in 2 months, 2014

Challenge
Rotten steps and railroad tie walls, overgrown shrubs and leaves piled over 1 ft deep. The house sits below the road, so moving material up and down the hill was hard.
Approach
We cleared the old shrubs, trees and tie walls, regraded for drainage and built a new way from the street to the front door that's safe day and night.

  • Grading and excavation for drainage

The owners wanted both yards updated with a modern, sustainable design that wouldn't take a lot of upkeep.
Approach
One design, installed in phases. Boulder walls define the beds and living areas, and plants were picked so something is in bloom through the year.
